WHAT IS A COOKIE?
A cookie is a harmless text file which is stored in your browser when visiting almost any web page. The utility of a cookie is that the web page could be able to remember your visit when surfing that page again. Although many people don’t know about it cookies have already been used for almost 20 years, when the first World Wide Web browsers appeared.
WHAT IS NOT A COOKIE?
It is not a virus, not a trojan, not a worm, not spasm, not spyware and it doesn’t open pop-up Windows.
WHAT INFORMATION DOES A COOKIE STORE?
Cookies do not use to store sensitive information about you, such as credit cards or bank data, photos, your Identification Card (ID) or personal information, etc.
The web server does not link you as a person; it links your web browser. As a matter of fact, if you usually surf the internet with Internet Explorer and try to browse the same web page with Firefox or Chrome you will see that the web page does not notice that you are the same person because it is actually linking the browser, not the person.
WHAT TYPES OF COOKIES DO EXIST?
- Technical cookies: They are the simplest ones and they allow, among other things, to know whether a human being or an automatic application is browsing, whether it is an anonymous user or a registered one, which are basic tasks for the proper functioning of any dynamic web.
- Analytical cookies: they collect information about the kind of browsing you are doing, the most used sections, consulted products, most usual browsing hours, language, etc.
- Advertising cookies: They show advertisements depending upon your navigation, your country of origin, language, etc.
WHAT ARE OWN COOKIES AND EXTERNAL ONES?
The own cookies are the ones generated by the web you are browsing and the external (third parties) are the ones generated by external services or suppliers such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DEACTIVATE COOKIES?
So that you can properly understand the effect that deactivating cookies may cause we show you here some examples:
- You won’t be able to share the content of that web page in Facebook, Twitter or any other social website.
- The website won’t be able to adapt the content to your own preferences, as it usually happens in online shops.
- You won’t have access to the personal area of that web page, for example My Account, My profile or My orders.
- Online shops: It will be impossible for you to shop online, your purchasing will have to be done by telephoning or visiting the physical shop, if available.
- It won’t be possible to personalise your geographic preferences such as time zone, currency or language.
- The website won’ be able to make web analysis about visitors and traffic on the web, which may result in the web being less competitive.
- You won’t be able to write in the blog, you won’t be able to upload photos, publish comments, evaluate or mark contents. The web will not either be able to identify if you are a person or an automatic application that publishes spasm.
- Sectorial advertising will not be allowed to be displayed, which will decrease the advertising income of the web page.
- All the social networking sites use cookies, if you deactivate them you won’t be able to use any social networking site.
